A retired union president says he hopes to bring new ideas and co-operation to Morinville this fall if elected to town council.

Long-time Morinville resident Ray White filed to run in the 2021 Morinville council election earlier this month.

White recently retired as president of the United Steelworkers Local 1-207, which is the largest steelworker’s local in Alberta. He is a long-time member of the Royal Canadian Legion and an active volunteer and fundraiser for the Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation.

White said he had been asked to run for council before, but never had the time to do so up until his retirement last June. Now, he hopes to use the creativity and leadership skills he has acquired through about 14 years in labour relations to improve his community.

White said council lacks cohesion, of late, citing many recent 4-3 votes as evidence, and criticized council’s decision to give itself a hefty pay-raise last term.

“It’s time for some change and some fresh ideas.”

White said he is an experienced advocate for people’s rights as a labour negotiator with a solid understanding of governance and fiduciary responsibility from having served as a trustee on pension plans.

Nominations for the Morinville council election are due Sept. 20. Visit www.morinville.ca/en/town-hall/election.aspx for details.
