Alberta’s network of food banks just got a celebrity to sing its praises, and the voice doing the singing is one of the best in the world.

Food Banks Alberta launched a new public service campaign with music icon k.d. lang who offered a video message encouraging Albertans to “expand their giving circle” to support food banks over the holiday season.

“I’m back living in Alberta after a while away and I just feel a real kinship to fellow Albertans. People are struggling and I want to give back where everything started for me,” the chanteuse said during the video shoot at the St. Albert-based provincial warehouse for food banks.

lang, who was born in Alberta and became internationally known for her incredible voice, has since become a vocal activist for human rights and animal rights issues.

She reached out to the organization earlier this month to lend her support. The short video message was filmed at the Food Banks Alberta provincial warehouse in Leduc.

Her message encourages people who can do so to give to food banks, which help so many thousands of people across Alberta.

“Christmas is really a beautiful time of the year, especially when you consider the feeling you get from giving,” she said in the promotional video.

“Your contribution of food, funds or your time will have an immediate impact on fellow Albertans. Anything you can give is most graciously accepted. Please consider expanding your giving circle this year and give to Food Banks Alberta.”

The video, found on Food Banks Alberta’s Youtube channel, will receive airtime on television with a radio commercial set to play as well during the holiday season.

Food Banks Alberta is thrilled to have her voicing her support for its network of 95 food banks.

“We are just overjoyed to work with k.d. on this giving campaign,” said Stephanie Walsh-Rigby, CEO of Food Banks Alberta. “Our network of 95 food banks does amazing work to support people in need. This has been a tough year for many Albertans but with k.d.’s help we hope to see an increase in support for food banks.”
