EDMONTON — Alberta has added outdoor activity prizes to its vaccine lottery to get more people in the province immunized.

The province says Albertans can win a lifetime fishing licence or a lifetime hunting licence.

The prizes also include five camping passes, Canmore Nordic Centre season ski passes and Kananaskis conservation passes.

Albertans will have the chance to win the prizes by receiving their first and second dose of COVID-19 vaccine and registering in the Outdoor Adventure Vaccine Lottery by Sept. 10.

The province says the winners are to be announced Sept. 17.

It says those who registered for the Open for Summer Lottery, which has three grand-prize draws of $1 million, will have to register separately for the Outdoor Adventure Vaccine Lottery.

The province says 74.2 per cent of eligible Albertans have received their first dose of vaccine, while 55.9 per cent are fully protected with two doses.

"Alberta is going the extra distance to get as many people vaccinated as possible. That means adding more targeted, unique prizes to our vaccine lottery," Premier Jason Kenney said in a statement Wednesday.

"The Open for Summer Lottery has moved our vaccine numbers up and these new prizes should appeal to some folks who have not yet got around to being vaccinated."

Opposition NDP environment critic Marlin Schmidt, however, was concerned about the 10 Kananaskis conservation passes in the lottery.

"It isn't a 'prize' if Albertans are winning something they should always have access to in the first place," he said in a statement.

"The inclusion of the K-Country passes is an insult to all Albertans and sets a bad precedent. What's next? AISH (Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped) cost of living increases? A new teacher for your kids' school? No wage roll back for the closest nurse in your family?"
