Cold Lake RCMP officer involved in early Saturday morning shooting

In the early hours of Saturday morning, a Cold Lake RCMP officer discharged his firearm, shooting a suspect in his lower leg. 

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating the Jan. 11, incident. 

At 2:30 a.m. local police were contacted about a break and enter in progress in the industrial area of Cold Lake south. 

An officer already in the area attended and located two individuals in a car. 

During the confrontation, events occurred that resulted in the officer discharging his firearm, shooting the 26-year-old driver in the lower leg.  

The suspect vehicle stopped and the officer, with additional RCMP, arrested both occupants of the vehicle without further incident. 

The driver sustained a gunshot wound and was transported to the hospital before being released into police custody. 

The 46-year-old female passanger was not injured and remains in prison. 

No police officers were injured and no other citizens were involved in the incident. 

ASIRT will be investigating the incident while police continue to investigate the break-in and the events leading up to the offence. 

No fruther details were provided by the police at this time.
