BANFF – Three highly experienced alpine mountaineers are presumed dead after attempting to climb the east face of Howse Peak on the Icefields Parkway.

According to Parks Canada, the party of three were reported overdue on Wednesday afternoon (April 17).

Visitor safety specialists immediately responded by helicopter and observed signs of multiple avalanches and debris containing climbing equipment.

The three men have been identified by Gripped Magazine as David Lama, Hansjorg Auer and Jess Roskelley and are widely considered among the best alpinists in the world with many first ascents.

"Further investigation is underway, but recovery efforts are not currently possible due to additional avalanches and dangerous conditions at the scene," wrote Krause, adding they are working to notify the families before releasing any more information.

"Precipitation and strong winds in the forecast will result in a rising avalanche hazard in the area. The east face of Howse Peak is remote and an exceptionally difficult objective, with mixed rock and ice routes requiring advanced alpine mountaineering skills."

Further updates will be provided as details become available.
