City Hall Reporter


The St. Albert Gazette, a perennial award-winning newspaper in Alberta’s Capital Region, is looking for an experienced city hall reporter to join the team.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for storytelling, and a strong understanding of municipal affairs. You don't back down from tough stories and you're determined to get to the bottom of complex issues. Covering council meetings is just the start. You are not a minute taker. You’re not satisfied with pat answers and government jargon. You know the stories go beyond the council chamber. Rate-payers are counting on you to tell them how their tax dollars are being spent, and how council decisions impact them. If you encounter a wall, you figure out a way to get around it, while doing your utmost to maintain solid working relationships with the people you cover in this high-profile and demanding news beat. As part of our busy newsroom, you will work collaboratively with others, producing high-quality stories and photos delivered through various platforms, including print, web, and social media. You must also be self-motivated and have a proven ability to generate story ideas.

Qualifications

Requirements of the position include:

Two or more years of experience;A demonstrated ability to write crisp, engaging stories;
Proven experience covering city hall;
Experience with freedom of information requests;
Excellent interviewing skills, demonstrating an ability to establish an appropriate rapport with sources;
Strong organizational and time management skills, ensuring deadlines are always met;
A keen interest in municipal legislation and council meetings;
Experience in community reporting, including features, spot news, and coverage of essential community beats;
A valid driver’s licence.
In addition, preference will be given to candidates who:


Have a strong understanding of online reporting and social media, and the appropriate integration of those tools to complement print products;
Can shoot video;
Have experience covering court and crime;
Have strong photography skills.
