The iconic Buffy Sainte-Marie performs at the Winspear Centre on Friday, Sept. 20.

Buffy Sainte-Marie is a singer-songwriter, an activist, educator, visual artist and winner of countless awards including a Juno Award and a Golden Globe. She’s also the first Indigenous person to win an Academy Award.

Sharing her incredible talent through songs focused on Indigenous peoples' issues, Sainte-Marie will perform at the Winspear Centre on Friday, Sept. 20.

Two years after the release of her 18th album, Medicine Songs, the Cree singer-songwriter keeps touring and trailblazing.

Born on the Piapot Cree First Nation reserve in the Qu'Appelle Valley, Sask., the Order of Canada recipient has written pop standards recorded by the likes of Janis Joplin, Elvis Presley, Donovan and Joe Cocker. In 1969, she recorded the world’s first electronic vocal album and spent five years as a special guest on Sesame Street.

She was even allegedly blacklisted from radio stations for her association with American Indian Movement. Never shying away from controversy, Sainte-Marie remains a North American icon with one foot planted squarely on both sides of the border.

Tickets for the concert are $37 and are available at 780-428-1414 or at winspearcentre.com.
