Chicks double up for concert

Whenever the CHICKAdivas plan a concert, expect that familiar dose of sexy brass sprinkled on all their robust a cappella lines.

Whenever the CHICKAdivas plan a concert, expect that familiar dose of sexy brass sprinkled on all their robust a cappella lines.

This coming Friday the Chicks will meet their match in the “C”-ing Double Concert as they pair up with the Toronto-based Cadence for yet another serendipitous a cappella concert.

The Chicks are a powerhouse fivesome, a mix of gorgeous harmonies and sassy humour. And their voices project that indefinable quality that earned them first place in Edmonton’s 2003 Northern Harmony A Cappella Festival.

But Cadence might be a sliver above the Chicks. Both of the foursome’s Juno nominated albums of pop/jazz — Frost Free and Twenty for One — have met with critical praise. And their own website describes them combining the sophisticated harmonies of Count Basie with the devil-may-care attitude of Louis Prima.

St. Albert’s own Bartha Stehlin Hartman, the alto Chick with the 3.5 musical range, explains that Cadence is on a 10-stop Alberta tour and they extended an invitation to the Chicks to join them on stage.

And although Cadence’s song list is under wraps, the Chicks are tripping down memory lane with few sentimental favourites such as The Lady is a Tramp and k.d. lang’s Still Thrives This Love and Miss Chatelaine.

One of the big crowd favourites is Opera Spoof – Bringing Out the Diva. Stehlin Hartman sweeps onto centre stage with a range from high C to low C, churning out bluesy grit in Not My Day Blues and Aretha Franklin’s Natural Woman.

“This is a great chance to see how girls can produce a cappella in relation to guys. It’s going to be an evening of pure voice without drums and guitar.”
