DakhaBrakha plays at the Winspear Centre

Tickets are on sale for the Ukrainian quartet’s performance on Oct. 17

Rap isn’t something you’d normally associate with Ukrainian music. But DakhaBrakha isn’t a typical Ukrainian folk ensemble.

This avant-garde quartet, created in 2004 at the Kyiv Centre of Contemporary Art, is an experimental blend of Ukraine’s traditional folk songs with the addition of world-influenced contemporary rhythms.

The songs are borrowed from ritual gatherings such as births, weddings and funerals, and they are recast and kicked into gear by non-traditional rhythms and beats.

It is DakhaBrakha’s mission to reintroduce time-honoured folk songs to the world at large, but especially to a younger Ukrainian generation searching for meaning in modern music.

Since 2011, they have played more than 300 concerts and major festivals across East and West Europe, Asia, Australia and North America. Stops included in their circuits were the 2014 Edmonton Folk Fest and the 2015-16 Arden Theatre season.

Accompanied by Indian, Arabic, Russian and Australian traditional instruments, DakhaBrakha will give a live performance at Edmonton’s Winspear Centre on Thursday, Oct. 17.

Tickets range from $37 to $42 plus service charges. Visit www.winspearcentre.comor call 780-428-1414.
