Drive-in opera is something that would have been unthinkable before COVID-19. However, the pandemic has pushed creativity to new heights and Edmonton Opera’s outdoor concept is a huge success.

Now in its third showcase of drive-in opera, Edmonton Opera (EO) is hosting Drive-In Opera: Songs of Spring on Saturday, March 13, at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium.

The 45-minute program of classical favourites ushers in spring and will be performed by Ana Toumine and Tyler Fitzgerald, two of EO’s emerging artists. Pianist Leanne Regehr provides accompaniment.

In following health restrictions, the two vocalists will sing from separate inflatable bubbles on the roof of the Jubilee Auditorium with live video footage projected onto the fly tower.

“With spring comes hope,” says Tim Yakimec, the company’s general director. “Our drive-in concerts are an uplifting experience for our staff, artists and audience alike. I can think of no better way to reflect on the past year then by coming together to share live music.”

The performance starts at 8:45 p.m. at the rear parking lot. Only 103 cars will be permitted to view the concert. Tickets are $40 per vehicle and must be purchased online at edmontonopera.com or 780-429-1000.
