The 90-odd mixed voices of the Edmonton Metropolitan Choir (EMC) have developed a reputation for treading new waters with a blend of exuberance and dignity.

In a follow-up to last February’s Underground to Freedom, an ode to the world of black spirituals and gospels, EMC is now venturing to Africa.

On Sunday Feb. 21 the choir presents Voices of Africa , a 70-minute musical journey that pulses with upbeat rhythms, melodies and harmonies.

Guest conductor David Wilson opens with N’kosi Sikelel’I Afrika. Originally written in Zulu for choirs and schools, it has now been adopted by the African National Congress as an anthem.

“It’s about the struggle and the hopes for Africa. What makes it so special are the words asking for God’s protection to help the nation,” said spokesperson Sara McEwan.

Another inspirational tune Siyahamba, roughly translated “we are marching in the light” is a 20th century South African hymn, and BamThatha salutes the experiences of Nelson Mandela’s leadership during his incarceration at Robben’s Island.

“It’s very inspirational music. We have taken this up a notch and since this is Black History and Heritage Month, we’re very proud to do our part.”

The concert starts at 3 p.m. Advance tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Tickets at the door are $15 for adults and $12 for students/seniors. Call 780-420-1757 or purchase online at www.tixonthesquare.ca.

Children’s theatre has boomed in the last decade and the VIP Kids Show boasts some of Edmonton’s best munchkin entertainers.

Join Davina Stewart, Donovan Workun, Dana Andersen, Cathy Derkach and St. Albert Children’s Theatre alumna Kate Ryan for a morning packed with music, comedy and puppets.

The party starts at 11 a.m. on the following Saturdays — Feb. 20, March 20 and 27 at the Varscona Theatre, 10329 – 83 Ave. Tickets are $5 at the door or in advance at 780-420-1757 or go online to: www.tixonthesquare.ca

Edmonton Musical Theatre (EMT) is holding auditions for Ladies in Lights , a tribute to those compelling women who defined musical theatre — Broadway divas such as Barbra Streisand, Liza Minnelli, Judy Garland and Patti Lupone to name a few.

But it’s not just a femme show. EMT also highlights the men who supported and helped fuel their dreams.

Auditions will be held Sunday, Feb. 21 from 5 to 9 p.m. at EMT Studio, 10104 – 121 St. Phone artistic director Michele Miller to book an appointment at 780-452-8046.

If there’s one thing that defines Mark Ammar and Noel ‘Big Cat’ Mackenzie, co-hosts of Ammar’s Open Stage, it’s their love of good food, drink and carefree music where everyone can play and the clock stands still.

This coming Tuesday, Feb. 23 at LB’s Pub, these two high-spirited dudes are featuring the members of the former Wednesday Acoustic Rock Pub Show — Norm Henze, Gord MacDonald, Chris Durand and Darryl (Schmiddy) Schmidt.

During the Wednesday jams, Henze brainstormed the tunes while MacDonald showed off his vocals and bass/guitar skills. Schmidt took drumming to a new level and Durand “broke the jam wide open” with his blues style and powerful emotional vocals.

“His brilliance as a guitarist on both the acoustic and electric guitar made you want to go down and play,” says Ammar.

This Tuesday night at 23 Akins Drive, the open jam runs from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. No cover charge.
