For St. Albert country singer-songwriter Dan Davidson, there is no more exciting time to be thriving in the music industry than now.

Young urban fans fill country festivals and Davidson knows how to reach them with songs that climb the charts.

At the 2018 Alberta Country Music Awards (ACMA) in January, Davidson scooped up Male Artist of the Year for the second year in a row, and Album of the Year highlighting Songs for Georgia, a CD named for his eldest daughter.

On Friday, the local star will add more songs to his fans’ streaming playlists with the album release of Juliet, a seven-track EP in honour of his younger daughter.

Four of the songs are new including Cinderella and Let’s Go There. Church is also a new track Davidson sang during Brett Kissel’s 115-stop tour that “covered every nook and cranny” in Canada.

“People everywhere were asking me about Church and I decided to record it. It’s a fun, old school country music. It’s a country song wrapped up in bluegrass and rock ’n’ roll. The hook lines are sweet and sassy,” said Davidson.

And then there’s Can’t Help Myself where Davidson reveals his quirky, playful side in a video where he turns into a watermelon head that hungrily devours any junk food in reach – chocolate cake, hamburgers, pancakes, whipped cream, Fruit Loops, chips, popcorn and Mountain Dew.

“When we shot the video, it took me about three hours to clean up afterwards,” laughs Davidson of the video now playing on his website at www.dandavidsonmusic.com.

The St. Albert resident also just returned from an inaugural Canadian Country Music Association week-long camp in the sunny Dominican Republic. Hosted by SOCAN and the CCMA, 16 established country music songwriters and producers were brought together with the goal of creating new radio-ready songs.

“We worked 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. where we had to write, finish, produce and record a song. It was tough to accomplish, but I’m not complaining too much. Where else can you go boogie boarding and have a beer during coffee break?”

Davidson returned with a genre-crossing song titled Don’t Judge a Beer By Its Label, now a semi-finalist in the Sirius XM Top Of The Country contest. In 2018, Andrew Hyatt, also a Dominican Republic camp participant, was crowned the winner, receiving $25,000.

Meanwhile, here on the homefront’s Friday night CD party, Davidson’s regular stalwarts are backing the play: guitarists Darren Gusnowski and Tyler Dianocky, drummer Greg Williamson, bassist Curtis Ebner and fiddler Tyler Beck.

Opening for Davidson are new country recording artists Cadillac Junkies and ACMA award-winning youth singer Krissy Feniak.
