5 Enchanting Hikes For Beginners That Are Hidden Around Alberta

Ready to get your hike on this summer, Alberta? You’re in luck. Alberta is filled with excellent trails to walk and places to discover. Here are a few easy hikes to put on your summer bucket list.

Let’s get outside! We live in Alberta, so we can’t exactly guarantee that summer is going to stick around for long. Therefore, we’ve got to seize those bluebird days and enjoy as much outdoor time as possible. If you want to explore your province by hitting the trail, your options are endless. The thing is, the rugged Rocky Mountains are home to some wildly challenging hikes. If you’re looking for something on the more accessible side or family-friendly, we’ve got just the thing. We’ve put together a list of some beautiful and beginner-friendly hikes in Alberta, and we’re excited to share them with you. Dust off those hiking boots. We’ve got some sights to see!

This gorgeous hike in Banff is the perfect way to spend a part of your morning or afternoon in the mountains. The trail is considered moderate and will take under two hours in both directions. The area is super popular, and dogs are allowed as long as they’re on leash. It is a bit of a climb, but overall it’s pretty manageable. The views are lovely, and coming down is a total breeze.

Badlands Trail

If you want an easy and beautiful hike in Alberta, you’ve officially found it. Badlands Trail near the Country of Newell in Dinosaur Provincial Park. The walk takes under a half-hour and is so very enchanting. As you stroll through, you’ll find interpretive information about the dinosaurs that once roamed the area and more. If you haven’t spent much time in the Badlands of Alberta, this is your sign.

Troll Falls is a gorgeous and family-friendly trail that starts near Kananaskis Village. You walk through a lush aspen forest and finish at a dreamy waterfall. The hike is 1.7 km each way and relatively flat the entire way. In the winter, you can even walk this trail and see the waterfall completely frozen. No matter the season, this little hike is an absolute must.

Grotto Canyon

Next, up Grotto Canyon! Located near Exshaw, Alberta, this route is a bit longer but is considered easy. The Grotto Canyon Trail has fantastic views from start to finish. You will walk along a little riverbed and see a small waterfall. This rugged area is unique and worth a try. There is a lot of loose rock, so wear sturdy footwear. If you want to spend time in nature, you can take it easy and turn back whenever you like. That’s the beauty of out-and-back hikes. The choice is yours!

Frank Slide Interpretive Center Loop

Near Crowsnest Pass, Alberta, this place is breathtaking. This short and easy hike takes you through the rubble that the historical Frank Slide left behind. Not only is this hike easy, but it’s also educational. You will find interpretive signs throughout to educate you on the chilling story behind the Frank Slide. Some of the rocks are massive. This place is very cool and offers an eye-opening perspective on past events.
