LETTER: Cost to create, then toss solar panels must be part of calculation

"Life cycles have a cost that needs be hedged against these million-dollar ideas."

Re: "Will the city's solar farm make money? Have a look at the numbers," The Gazette, July 14.

I was unable to see the land lost costs in the numbers.

More importantly, I have taken issue with the start of the 35th paragraph in the article, “The farm would prevent 14000-15000 tinned of GHG emissions … .” It does not establish the greenhouse-gas emissions it costs to create the solar farm.

The solar array will use nearly 95 per cent of non-renewable resources that can not be recycled. To determine the savings of greenhouse-gas emissions, you must use the cost of creation and cost of repurposing or recycling any said product.

Life cycles have a cost that needs be hedged against these million-dollar ideas. Will St Albert just put the panels in a sea can and mail them to Vietnam in 2055? Where is that cost in the model?

Also, the land that is being used, what is the volume of carbon sinks being lost by putting up these non-recyclable, rare-earth-sucking glass panels?
