LETTER: Don't spend money on consultation, just make changes

Re: "Council votes for public engagement over city names," The Gazette, Dec. 8.

I note with interest the City of St Albert's intention to spend $325,000 to study and consult on city names. I wonder if it might not be possible to just agree that naming things after culture-destroying, abusive, and morally questionable individuals is not now, nor was it ever, a good idea?

In addition, if mistakes were made in the past in this regard, perhaps we should just correct them immediately and not expend large sums consulting on something that is, to my mind anyway, self-evident? If we’ve got $325,000 burning a hole in our collective pockets, how about we try to do some good with it instead of throwing it away?

James Johnston, St. Albert
