LETTER: Motorists need to slow down, wait until pedestrians cross

"I would like to see increased visibility of law enforcement officers around St. Albert making our streets safer for people walk, at least in marked crosswalks and pedestrian crossings at major intersections."

I am absolutely appalled and saddened by the recent actions of three motorists.

I was crossing from west to east at the pedestrian crossing on McKinney Avenue and Dawson Road. I had 10 seconds remaining on the walk light when I literally had two vehicles drive behind me within 30 to 60 centimetres of me through the intersection turning onto Dawson Road. Then a vehicle turned directly in front of me from McKinney Avenue onto Dawson Road, again within 60 centimetres of hitting me. I was outraged that these motorists did not wait until I reached the curb before they drove through the intersection!

I have lived on Lombard Crescent for 29 years and I have never experienced such appalling behaviour from motorists. I walk my dog daily along Dawson Road. We have the resident photo-radar vehicle sitting on the corner, but where are the other law enforcement officers to monitor such dangerous driving? There is a new turning lane from Dawson Road onto McKinney – I haven’t seen any law enforcement officers monitoring how it is working. I wonder how many other people have experienced such appalling driving from St. Albert motorists.

I would like to see increased visibility of law enforcement officers around St. Albert making our streets safer for people walk, at least in marked crosswalks and pedestrian crossings at major intersections.

Alison Zalasky, St. Albert
