LETTER: Ridiculous to underestimate China's military muscle

Re: "Letter: Surely, he jests!" April 21 Gazette.

I am used to seeing rants from Doris Wrench Eisler in the Letters section. I don’t generally pay too much attention to them, but her letter in the Gazette on April 21 needs to be addressed. Her claim the U.S. military has 800 bases compared with three for China is ridiculous. China’s military is 2.1-million strong, plus reserves, according to Wikipedia. Looking at other sources, these numbers are reasonably consistent.

Are we to believe the average Chinese military base has 700,000 military members on it? Are we to believe the military bases in the South China Sea on man-made islands are not really military bases? Are we to believe there is only one base each for the army, navy, and air force? I don’t think so. This destroys any credibility in the rest of the statistics mentioned in Eisler's letter.

As to her comments about Alan Murdock, some correction also needs to be made. He is not Mr. Murdock, he is Dr. Alan Murdock. Dr. Murdock is a respected pediatrician who our family relied on in our children’s younger years. This attack on him is not warranted.

It would be nice to see something positive from Ms. Eisler, for a change.
