Patricia Trudeau has a real passion for writing, and it shows. St. Albert’s octogenarian author has just returned to form with her newest adventure in her series of Agnes Carroll mysteries. The ongoing saga of the sleuth is now into its seventh title, Mirror Image.

It was only in 2015 when the sixth story came out. It seems like Trudeau just cannot help herself but to keep producing these marvelous mysteries.

“I’ll always be writing as long as I’m here,” she said. “The years go by so fast. I was working on it for quite a while and then I finally got it all together.”

Mirror Image was published at the end of July. When last we caught up with Carroll in 2015’s Dead Reckoning in Dublin, she had moved from her resident Braeside abode to Ireland to write a play for a university lecturer at Trinity College. Trouble always finds the lady detective, however, and bodies started turning up.

Now, she has moved back to Alberta where the stage is set for her to exert her prodigious skills of deduction and detection. She accepts an invitation to visit a friend just returned from a long stay in the south of France, moving into a new housing development in west Edmonton. Unfortunately, the visit does not materialize as a macabre scene awaits Carroll upon her arrival.

The dire problems are compounded when her old nemesis, Det. Homer Blake, is sent to investigate. Interested in avoiding being named as a suspect, the aged yet ever-feisty Carroll conducts her own investigation with clues that take her back decades.

Trudeau is a tireless force who still participates in the Saint City Writers’ literary circle and exhibits her paintings with VASA, most recently this spring. She admits that there’s always a possibility that Carroll will return again for an eighth or even ninth adventure.

“It's not something I want to give up, as long as I can hold a pen. I keep on writing,” she continued.

“I do have part of another book written. I don't know whether I’ll finish it but I keep on going with it. You always have to start over when you start something new. You always have to start at the beginning.”
