A group of local business people have once again teamed up to host a round of Texas Scramble golf tournament that will benefit charities. Organizers only hope to spark more interest from local golfers.

The St. Albert Special Olympics and Stollery Children’s Hospital Golf Classic is an annual event sponsored by Dairy Queen, Global Cell and other companies. Now in its fourth year, one of the main organizers is asking the public for more support.

“It’s a great event,” said Dave Rodwell of D.E. Rodwell Investigative Services. “It’s lots of fun. We would like to see more golfers come out. It would make it a better event.”

Currently the number of registrations is sitting at about 50 players but Rodwell says that number can easily be doubled. Normally the fundraisers bring in about $7,000 to $8,000. That figure is divided equally between the two charities.

“The beauty about this is that you can enter your own foursome … or a businessman wants to reward three of his employees, take them out for a day. There’s different ways that people could get involved. It could be a family outing. I think that people should take advantage of these golf tournaments in that regard.”

He also mentioned that if you are a single then you could use the event as a networking tool for your own business.

This tournament is made even more relevant this year as St. Albert will play host to the Special Olympics Summer Games at the end of next month. More than 1,100 athletes and coaches from all over the province will converge on the city from June 26 to 28 to participate in several events as a celebration of perseverance and human dignity.

“It’s going to be quite an event this summer in the community.”

St. Albert Special Olympics and Stollery Children’s Hospital Golf Classic takes place with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on Monday, June 15. The Sandpiper Golf and Country Club is located on Meadowview Drive. Entrance fee is $125, the same as the first level of sponsorship support. The organizers are also asking the public for donations and prizes.
