Arlington hearing still a go

A public hearing into the affordable housing proposal for 70 Arlington Dr. is scheduled to proceed as planned on Monday, despite the filing of a lawsuit this week that’s aimed at stopping the rezoning process.

A public hearing into the affordable housing proposal for 70 Arlington Dr. is scheduled to proceed as planned on Monday, despite the filing of a lawsuit this week that’s aimed at stopping the rezoning process.

The public hearing is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Monday and city administration is planning for it to proceed, said Chris Belke, chief legislative officer for the city.

The hearing is meant to address the rezoning of the land at 70 Arlington Dr. and a proposal from Habitat for Humanity – Edmonton to build 34 affordable housing units.

As of late Friday afternoon, there were 14 people registered to speak to council, Belke said.

There is some doubt as to what will proceed Monday, as the city’s legal department hasn’t finished reviewing the situation, said Mayor Nolan Crouse.

“I don’t know if the public hearing is a go, but at five o’clock we’re certainly going to be asking the question of our legal staff,” he said.

“At this stage we’re told there’s nothing stopping us from proceeding but the review hasn’t been completed by our legal staff.”
