Andrew Heigh, 29, now in custody at Edmonton Remand Centre, was refused bail at Morinville Provincial Court on Nov. 5.

Morinville RCMP arrested him June 29. He faces 23 charges for various crimes that took place in Sturgeon County, Cold Lake and Edmonton.

Heigh is accused of kidnapping for ransom, extortion, theft over $5,000, robbery, possessing stolen property, assault with a deadly weapon, and possession of a prohibited firearm.

In the Sturgeon Country matter, a Morinville man was alerted to two males at his office attempting to break into his 2016 White GMC Sierra truck. The suspects jumped into a Cadillac Escalade stolen earlier in the Bon Accord area and attempted to escape.

The victim jumped into his truck and chased the car. During the chase, one male in the Cadillac allegedly pointed a shotgun at the complainant and fired. The Cadillac also attempted to side-swipe the truck.

RCMP deployed a spike belt, and were able to slow down the car. Toward the end of the chase, the passengers exited the Cadillac and attempted separate escapes.

RCMP say they found Heigh in a homeowner’s back yard hiding under a bush. When he failed to respond to RCMP commands, a police dog was dispatched. Heigh sustained several lacerations and was treated at Sturgeon Hospital.

Proceedings for the Cold Lake matter will resume on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at Morinville Provincial Court. Heigh will appear by CCTV. The Sturgeon County matter is scheduled for trial at St. Albert Provincial Court on Feb. 24 and 25, 2021.
