The Farting Skeletons are primed for action. A week ahead of their participation in SAIF's Car Rally, they challenged two teams – Hannabilists and Double Trouble – for rally fame and glory.
These past 15 months have been pretty tough for families with school-aged children, many of whom have been inside their houses for far too long. Suddenly, Stop Abuse in Families’ first-ever car rally comes around, and a collective sigh of relief for some outdoors entertainment can almost be heard.

That’s exactly where the Hopwoods are. The family of four is more than ready for the afternoon adventure on Saturday, and they’re bringing their unique team name with them.

“I did double check with them: ‘If you need us to change our name, just let me know,’ ” Patricia Hopwood said, after confirming SAIF’s registration official has given The Farting Skeletons the green light.

Admittedly cooped up, Hopwood expressed how fortunate their family is to have the support it does, especially with rambunctious 12- and 13-year-old boys in the house. As one might easily imagine, it’s from their fertile imaginations that the team name was born.

About six years ago, the Hopwoods did a five-kilometre run for their first family team event.

“We were just sitting around the table and we wanted to come up with a team name. The boys came up with – as young boys do – the Farting Skeletons. They just came up with it and thought it was hilarious and giggled about it for an hour-and-a-half,” she said, adding it is not the name she would have picked.

“Now, it's actually just turned into our family team name any time we do any kind of walks or runs or any team events. It's just migrated along with us and now it’s our tradition. We even have a logo. It's very interesting to hear announcers when you're crossing the finish line.”

The event runs rain or shine from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 5. Up to 100 teams will start from several different locations and take various paths as they follow clues to businesses and city landmarks to solve puzzles and do challenges for points. Designed for fun while being COVID-appropriate, team members will need masks and hand sanitizer and be fully prepared to physically distance on their adventures.

Hopwood said her family is proud to support a great cause, something that’s important to the whole clan. That, plus reducing the cooped-upness.

“Everybody was on board immediately. Everybody was super excited. Everybody just wants out of the house. We wanted to do something different.”

An email from SAIF Car Rally Committee member Charlene Zoltenko noted the Farting Skeletons have challenged the Hannabilists and Double Trouble.

“Some families are competing against each other! Golf Buddies are challenging each other!” she wrote.
