Blind Pig demolition begins

Demolition to continue over the next week
St. Albert Mayor Cathy Heron started off the demolition of the Blind Pig Pub with a bang July 14, striking the first blow against its back patio with a backhoe. About 50 people witnessed the event.

Built in around 1970, the building was once home to St. Albert's first Dairy Queen and became the Blind Pig in 1993. Its owners announced its demolition last month.

Billy Gavigan, who is overseeing the demolition, said that crews would spend the next two weeks removing asbestos from the building before bringing it down over about a week.

Developers plan to replace the pub with an eight-storey net-zero condo dubbed "St. A Square" that will produce zero net greenhouse gas emissions each year.
