St. Albert schools on hold and secure this morning

Mayor Cathy Heron, in a Facebook post, said around 10 a.m. the hold-and-secure measures were due to, "multiple carjackings with firearm in the area," but not directly related to any of St. Albert's schools.

St. Albert schools were on hold and secure this morning as a precautionary measure.

Parents all over the city received emails just before 10 a.m. stating: "All schools have been asked by the RCMP to go into a 'hold and secure' due to a situation in the community."

The emails assured parents students were safe inside their schools, and that classes were continuing as normal.

Mayor Cathy Heron, in a Facebook post, said around 10 a.m. the hold-and-secure measures were due to, "multiple carjackings with firearm in the area." She said the situation was not related to the schools, and that "two are in custody, with one outstanding."

Shortly after 10:30 a.m. St. Albert schools sent emails out stating the hold-and-secure protocol had ended, and schools were "continuing on with our day as usual."

Around 10:30 a.m. St. Albert RCMP said in a release they were "involved in an unfolding event involving a carjacking" earlier this morning. RCMP said they chose to place some schools and daycares in a “hold and secure” as a precautionary measure.

At this time, the hold and secure has been lifted. St. Albert RCMP said "there are no public safety concerns, and two individuals are in custody."

The investigation is still in its early stages and RCMP said they will provide more information once more is known.
