Business Beat: Business takes home Community Inclusive Award

Inclusive Award

Leading Edge Physiotherapy was awarded for its inclusive workplace on April 5. The business took home the Community Inclusion Award after hiring two employees, Ryan MacIntyre and Erik King, through Inclusion Alberta last year.

“We’re just thrilled to have Erik and Ryan as part of our team,” said co-owner Heidi Fedoruk.

Fedoruk didn’t know Leading Edge had been nominated until she received an email announcing the award.

She said when she found out, she was both honoured and reflective.

“We were quite taken aback, because I'm not sure that that's something we should get an award for,” she expressed. “I wish ... that hiring inclusively happens all the time everywhere.”

At Leading Edge Physiotherapy, both employees earn a full wage. They also work as technicians, being treated the same as any other worker. The only difference is that they have aids who help them throughout the day.

Fedoruk said she felt thankful for being able to participate in Inclusion Alberta’s employment program.

“Inclusion Alberta has been wonderful, helping support the entire process,” she said. “We wish many more small and large businesses would consider it.”

The awards ceremony was part of Inclusion Alberta’s 2019 Family Conference, where over 200 participants spent two days learning how to support children and adults with disabilities.

While this is the first time winning the Community Inclusive Award, Leading Edge Physiotherapy has won two small business awards through the St. Albert and District Chamber of Commerce’s annual small business awards.
