Cops make heavy find at Grandin Mall

Local RCMP found an above average stolen vehicle this week in the Grandin Mall parking lot.

Local RCMP found an above average stolen vehicle this week in the Grandin Mall parking lot.

Municipal bylaw officers were called about a giant backhoe in the parking lot on Wednesday out front of Grandin Theatres and discovered the piece of heavy equipment had actually been stolen.

While it was initially reported as a parking complaint because it had been there for several days, officers discovered the vehicle had actually been stolen from an Edmonton construction site.

The piece actually belongs to a St. Albert company headquartered in Riel Business Park.

Cpl. Laurel Kading said officers got a call about the vehicle because it had been in the parking lot for four or five days and people there didn’t see any reason for it to be there.

She said when officers arrived they quickly determined it was stolen, but are now looking for the public’s help.

“It would be quite interesting to know how it got there,” said Kading.

She said the RCMP appreciates when the public calls in with these sorts of tips because simple parking complaints can lead to larger investigations.

“We really appreciate people alerting us to things like this, because we likely would otherwise not have noticed it.”

Officers who saw the vehicles would probably have assumed it was related to a construction project if they hadn’t received the heads up. Kading added that, in this case, finding out meant a local business got their very expensive piece of equipment back.

Anyone who might have spotted this vehicle being dropped off in the parking lot is being asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or the St. Albert RCMP Detachment at 780-458-7700.
