County council shall place a bench in Cardiff Park this September to honour those slain in this year’s mass shooting in Nova Scotia.
Sturgeon County councillors voted unanimously Aug. 25 to spend $2,200 to place a commemorative bench in Cardiff Park to commemorate the mass shooting that happened in Colchester County, Nova Scotia, in April.
Gabriel Wortman killed 22 people during a shooting rampage in Colchester County April 18 and 19 before being shot and killed by police.
Coun. Kristen Toms said a county resident who lost a sister, brother-in-law and niece in the shooting planned to place a commemorative oak tree in Cardiff Park in their memory, and had asked the county if they could place a bench next to it.
Coun. Wayne Bokenfohr backed the proposal, noting he had close ties to Colchester County Coun. Tom Taggart through their years with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
“It strikes home the importance of family and how one issue can bring a country together,” he said of the tragedy.
Council heard the county would hold a dedication ceremony for the tree and bench around Sept. 14. Bokenfohr volunteered to send video of the event to Colchester County officials.
