A second person has tested positive for COVID-19 at the SIGIS out-of-school daycare classroom attached to Leo Nickerson school.

Leo Nickerson Elementary School sent a letter to families notifying them of the second case confirmed by Alberta Health Services (AHS) and the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) on Sept. 11.

The outbreak is limited to one classroom of SIGIS and does not extend to the school or to the SIGIS portable location, the letter reads. The CDC stated the students from the out of school care classroom were not at school during the time when they could spread the infection to others.

At this time, no other cases have been reported and there has been no exposure to students at the school, the letter reads.

According to Alberta Health, the second case means the province has now classified this as an outbreak.

Families of the SIGIS program were first notified about the first case on Sept. 6 and directed students to isolate for 14 days and get tested.

"We understand that this case highlights the challenges we all face to ensure that COVID-19 does not spread into the school community. We ask for the diligence of our families in ensuring that even mild symptoms are taken seriously, in spite of the inconvenience and frustration of missed school and work," the letter reads.

"We care deeply for every one of our students and families. Our thoughts are with those who have been affected. I appreciate the part each of you are playing to keep our school community as safe as possible."
