COVID-19 is now a pandemic and the Alberta government has advised cancellations of all large events, but that doesn't mean all the news out there is doom and gloom!

If you are looking for a little respite from a news feed dominated by the relentless barrage of latest coronavirus developments, we would like to offer you some our favourite wholesome and heartwarming stories from the past week that make no mention of COVID-19.

Remembering Patricia Trudeau

The passing of inspiring people is always a sombre affair, but Patricia Trudeau's life was undoubtedly one to celebrate. Reporter Scott Hayes calls her "the grande dame of St. Albert's arts and literature scene."

You can read Scott's thoughtful account of this remarkable St. Albertan, told through the words of one of her relatives, here:

Chris Olson's search for a climate solution

Those of you who've read Kevin Ma's work in the past know he doesn't skimp on his research. There are some seemingly insurmountable challenges where our climate is concerned, but there are things to be excited about, too.

Kevin is searching out those among us who have a cool idea to help keep the planet cool. Got a suggestion? You should send him an email at [email protected].

In the meantime, enjoy this fascinating profile of Chris Olson, who was raised in St. Albert and came across an innovative alternative energy system while studying at NAIT.

If you're a local sports fan, you won't want to miss Jeff Hansen's account of the St. Albert Skyhawks' thunderous performance last Saturday, March 7, continuing a season of excellence. Talk about hometown heroes!

As Jeff writes, the Skyhawks trounced the Jasper Place Rebels 84-48 in the metro Edmonton division one final and confirmed their reputation as the overwhelming favourites to repeat as provincial champions:

St. Albert Skyhawks 31-1 overall as playoff champions in women's basketball

Five inspiring women

Last Sunday was International Women's Day, and Anna Borowiecki crafted a wonderful story about five women who have been recognized for their efforts to help those in need.

Meet Françoise Ruban, Karen Gall, Kristine McDonnell, Kim Bugera and Shairl Honey. International Women's Day might be over, but we're still moved by these powerful community-minded women!

St. Albert students making a difference

While we're on the topic of powerful St. Albertans, the 800-some Bellerose Composite students who participated in this year's Bikeathon deserve a serious shout-out. Together with the support of their teachers, school staff and community members, these students raised over $240,000 for cancer research.

The final count was still being tabulated when reporter Kevin Ma wrote this story, but this amount catapulted Bellerose to a 17-year total of nearly $3 million raised. Congratulations to these students and everyone who supported them!
