The Morinville RCMP are on the scene of a fatal collision near Alexander and drivers are asked to avoid the area for several more hours.

Update
This story was updated with additional information from the RCMP at 5 p.m. June 2, 2022.

An 85-year-old woman from Edmonton has died following a collision between two vehicles just east of Alexander First Nation.

Morinville RCMP closed the intersection of Hwy. 44 and Hwy. 642 north of Rivière Qui Barre and east of Alexander for several hours on June 2 following a crash between a car and a jeep near that location.

In an email, Wood Buffalo RCMP Cpl. Lacey Blair said RCMP got a call about the crash at about 11 a.m. Working with a collision reconstructionist, police determined that a car had crossed the centre line of Hwy. 44 and collided head-on with a jeep just north of Hwy. 642.

Blair said the two people in the jeep had serious injuries and were transported to hospital, one by ground ambulance and the other by STARS Air Ambulance. The driver and lone occupant of the car, an 85-year-old woman from Edmonton, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have reopened the intersection and continue to investigate the cause of the crash, Blair said. Weather conditions were dry, sunny, and clear, while the intersection itself was devoid of trees or other obstructions.
