Update: 8:46 p.m.
Environment Canada has ended a snow squall warning, but a wind warning remains in effect.
After weeks of unseasonably warm weather, it seems winter has arrived with a bang - or a howl, given how strong the wind was outside on Tuesday evening.
Early in the evening, Environment Canada issued a snow squall warning for St. Albert and much of Alberta. The federal department issued a wind warning soon after.
The warnings said residents should expect periods of brief but intense snowfall, with visibility being rapidly reduced to near zero by heavy and blowing snow. Wind gusts could reach speeds between 90 and 120 km/h at times but should subside before morning.
A brief band of heavy snow is expected to move from northwest Alberta toward central areas of the province, continuing southeast this evening.
The wind warning cautioned residents that damage to buildings, such as shingles and windows, could occur, and high winds can toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break.
