With nicer weather upon us, you really should get out for some fresh air and exercise. Now, you can do so with an important cause to put a spring in your step too.

You can hike or bike to support palliative care in the community with the St. Albert Sturgeon Hospice Association’s first-ever Hike or Bike for Hospice. The event runs next week in conjunction with Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Week.

"We just thought that it was a great opportunity for participants to take some time to remember those who've passed, or those living with or caring for someone with a life-limiting illness," offered Jennifer McCurdy, co-ordinator with SASHA.

People can sign up individually or in teams at no charge in order to participate in any five-kilometre course of their choosing to be completed during the week of May 2 to 9. All pledges will go to support, educate and empower those who are affected by or caring for a person with a life-limiting illness. Participate in memory of a loved one, someone who is facing end of life, to support a caregiver or to support compassion and palliative care in your community.

“SASHA’s goal is to provide an annual, safe event for families and friends to raise funds to support palliative and end of life care, while honouring the memories of their loved ones,” reads the event’s website at sasha-cares.com/hike-for-hospice.

"Because of COVID, it's made it challenging for us to give support to people," McCurdy continued, pointing out that most people at end of life want to be in their homes being cared for by their families and loved ones. Those caregivers need the kind of support that SASHA gives.

"We have this compassionate care volunteer program that typically goes into people's homes or into the hospice to give support. We're now doing it virtually, which does give us some challenges. But right now, people need that support. People are feeling that they're really on their own."

The campaign ends on Sunday, May 9, and it had already raised 30 per cent of its goal of $5,000 as of Tuesday morning. For any questions or inquiries, please contact our co-ordinator via email at [email protected] or by calling 587-921-1345.
