Twelve new COVID-19 cases have been diagnosed in St. Albert.

The city currently sits at 206 active cases, according to the latest provincial data released Thursday. Another 20 people recovered in the past 24 hours.

In Sturgeon County, active cases are at 42 while 491 people have recovered since the pandemic began.

In Morinville, active cases sit at 45 with 282 people having recovered since the pandemic began.

Across the province, another 968 new cases of COVID-19 were diagnosed in the past 24 hours, with another 24 deaths reported.

The COVID-related death of a third medical professional, a physician in his 70s, was reported this week. He did not contract the virus at work.

In the past 24 hours, 14,833 tests were completed, putting the province’s positivity rate at 6.4 per cent.

There are currently 13,298 active cases within the province, with 871 people are in hospital and 139 in ICU.

Alberta Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said the province has seen a decrease in numbers following the public health restrictions but there is still much more that needs to be done.

“It is still too high,” said Hinshaw of the numbers.

Hinshaw said numbers are still significantly higher than numbers from the summer and fall.

“We still have not seen the impact of the recent holidays and we will be closely monitoring the spread over the coming weeks to determine whether it is safe to recommend beginning to relax our current approach.”
