Library makes summer reading fun

Part of the St. Albert Public Library will become a deserted island this soon. That’s because it is once again promoting literacy by hosting its annual Summer at the Library reading programs for patrons.

Aimed at children from Grades 1 through 6, Shipwrecked is being called a thrilling hands-on game with fun activities and rewarding reads. The program room is going to allow its participants to explore survival, deep sea diving, nature study, mystery and even fantasy.

The players will face different challenges like deciphering a code, digging and a search. It will take six turns to complete the game during the seven-week program, each time offering a new book to read at home. Story time and craft sessions will be offered as well.

Pre-schoolers won’t miss out on the action though. Bubbletree Island is about looking for the key to unlock the treasure chest. This program is aimed at those who are old enough to identify pictures and know their colours, plus there is a component for more advanced readers.

Julie Collison, communications co-ordinator at the library, said, “This is a great opportunity for everyone to come down to the library and try out new reads and have lots of fun along the way.”

She added teens and adults have their own programs too.

“For adults we are hoping to encourage people to try something new. We all get used to reading the same type of things, and our Round Out Your Reading venture will hopefully open up whole new vistas for people who love to read.”

For teens, there is the third annual summer reading club called Extra, Extra, Read All About It. Teens in Grades 7 through 12 will read books and post their reviews online to win prizes.

The programs run from June 25 to Aug. 16. For the survivors of Shipwrecked, the library will host the Inspector Iwannano Show: The Case of the Missing Mom featuring Brian Lehr, comedy magician on Friday, Aug. 21.
