The Citadel Theatre’s annual 10-day Teens @ The Turn Theatre Festival provides one of the finest platforms for their talent and is now running until May 30.

For the past several months more than 50 emerging artists have worked with professionals to create three full-length plays, a play reading series and a rockin’ cabaret.

“The festival provides an opportunity for emerging and experienced artists to spend months together producing theatre, exchanging knowledge and ideas and creating community. This year’s festival is our most ambitious yet because it’s near impossible to keep up with the kids’ drive and passion,” says festival director Keri Ekberg.

Last night the festival opened with Rent: School Edition, a musical that looks at the lives of seven friends living a Bohemian lifestyle in New York.

Tonight After Juliet opens in the aftermath of Romeo and Juliet's deaths. And Shelter debuts Sunday as a missing girl invites the audience to spend time with 12 young people living on the streets and hear their stories.

There are also two play readings following the 7:30 p.m. performances of After Juliet and Shelter.

And closing this event is a cabaret on Saturday, May 30 that features an eclectic line-up of original music, dance, poetry and magic. St. Albert’s own Robert Mulder and former St. Albert Children’s Theatre alumnus Sean Sonego will perform.

Tickets are $15 or $45 for a festival pass. For more information check out www.citadeltheatre.com.

On May 26 Ammar’s Tuesday Open Stage re-introduces Norm Henze, the former house guitarist at The Rock and Castle Rock pubs. Now a regular with Coaster 44, the St. Albert musician specializes in variety.

“He is always searching out new tunes which brings us a great spark on stage,” says host Mark Ammar. Joining Henze is Zeek Ammar, a dynamic musician who complements Henze’s eclectic style.

The open jam starts at 9 p.m. at LB’s Pub on 23 Akins Drive. No cover.
