Masks once again mandatory in Sturgeon County

County back on COVID-19 watch list

Sturgeon County is once again under a COVID-19 watch, and that means it’s time to mask up.

Alberta Health Services placed Sturgeon County under a COVID-19 watch on Sept. 21 after it reported 15 active cases and 53.6 per 100,000 people there. The county was last on the watch list on Aug. 31.

The watch designation activated Sturgeon County’s face coverings bylaw, which requires anyone in the county or at a county-owned facility to wear a face mask when they are in an indoor or mostly enclosed public space or public vehicle. The bylaw is set to trigger automatically whenever the county is placed under a COVID-19 watch, and was first triggered on Aug. 20.

“Council designed this bylaw to be flexible and reflect what’s happening in the county,” Mayor Alanna Hnatiw said in a media release.

“As the numbers have gone up, it makes sense that our preventative measures should also increase.”

Hnatiw said her thoughts went out to all who have been affected by COVID-19. She encouraged residents to look out for each other by wearing masks, staying two metres apart, washing hands and staying home when sick.

Sturgeon County’s mask bylaw would remain in effect until the county spent 14 consecutive days off the COVID-19 watch list.
