Morinville RCMP officers found two fully loaded guns in the cab of a pickup that was stopped for a traffic stop.

An officer pulled the pickup over early Sunday morning, around 4 a.m. and found a loaded handgun and a loaded shotgun.

Three people were in the truck — two males and one female. One young man was taken into custody.

Staff Sgt. Mac Richards said the incident began as a routine traffic stop and the officer spotted the weapons.

The officer was especially concerned, because both weapons were loaded and the handgun was in arm’s reach of the driver.

Dusty Jordan Sand, 28, from Westlock has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime, possession of a prohibited weapon, transporting a loaded firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.

Sand was initially remanded in custody, but was released on $1,000 bail and will make his first court appearance today in Morinville.

The other male and the female in the car were released without charge.

Several sources have told the Gazette Sand is the younger brother of Danny and Robert Sand.

Robert Sand and his girlfriend were convicted in the death of Const. Dennis Strongquill in Russell, Man. in 2001.

Danny Sand was killed in a shootout with police at a Manitoba hotel in connection with that incident.
