Morinville RCMP investigating fatal collision in Sturgeon County

One dead, five injured in head-on collision

A 25-year-old Parkland County man has died and five people were hospitalized after a head-on collision in Sturgeon County.

On Feb. 9, around 5:20 p.m., Morinville RCMP responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision on Highway 44 near Twp. Rd. 535, south of Villeneuve.

The RCMP said its preliminary investigation showed an SUV travelling northbound on Highway 44 and an SUV travelling southbound collided.

The 25-year-old male driver of the southbound SUV was pronounced deceased at the scene, and an adult female and infant were taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The adult female driver of the northbound SUV suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries. Two youth in the northbound vehicle were taken to hospital as well.

Traffic on Highway 44 was diverted for a couple of hours while police investigated. Icy road conditions and gusty winds were reported at the time of the collision.

Morinville RCMP continue to investigate.
