St. Albert has proposed refinements to future lines on the map that may determine the city’s growth for the next 50 years.

During a meeting of Sturgeon County and St. Albert’s annexation negotiating subcommittee Aug. 15, members discussed refining the proposed annexation boundary and the possible implications of doing so, according to a joint press release dated Aug. 19.

St. Albert Mayor Cathy Heron said in an interview the two councils agreed to a maximum boundary adjustment at the beginning of the process but had to wait on technical studies of the landscape before nailing down exact boundaries.

“The technical studies were all kind of finished this spring, and when council looked at the technical studies, we made some refinements to the boundary, we sent them off to Sturgeon County for a response and now we’re waiting for a response,” Heron said.

After boundaries are agreed upon, the subcommittee will do a financial impact analysis and negotiate around compensation.

Sturgeon County Mayor Alanna Hnatiw said in an email the memorandum of understanding between the two municipalities states the county and city will communicate jointly to the public.

“As we are to be communicating jointly, I will agree with Mayor Heron’s statement and add we are making progress,” she wrote.
