Recreation moving west

City council lands on Rohit's northwest St. Albert parcel for location of future recreation facility

St. Albert could be killing two birds with one stone by choosing land on the city’s west side for a future recreation centre.

On Monday, city council voted 4-3 directing the chief administrative officer to acquire land in northwest St. Albert for a new recreation facility, which some noted would spur development in the Lakeview Business District.

The land in question was offered by Rohit Land Development in the Range Road 260 area structure plan, and includes 30 acres of fully developable land along with a 29-acre former landfill. Rohit is currently in the process of closing the landfill, which could be used for sports fields.

Council had two other options on the table, including a proposal by Landrex Inc. to develop a sports campus in Erin Ridge North just north of Neil Ross Road, and a city-owned lot in Badger Lands.

Mayor Cathy Heron said residents need to have expectations the process will be “slow and steady,” and it will be a long way until a shovel is put in the ground.
