SAIF gets boost from sorority

The agency that provides free counselling to people experiencing violence at home got a boost from the local chapter of a non-profit women's organization.

The agency that provides free counselling to people experiencing violence at home got a boost from the local chapter of a non-profit women's organization.

On Thursday afternoon representatives from the international sorority Beta Sigma Phi handed over a cheque for more than $2,600 to St. Albert Stop Abuse in Families (SAIF). The money was surplus from the ladies group's recent annual tri-provincial convention held in the city last fall.

Chapter member Ruth Browton said such donations are a common practice and SAIF was the most likely candidate because of the ties between the two groups.

"It's because of what they do," she explained. "We felt that this assisted the family so we thought this was a really good all-around (charity), and it's a St. Albert establishment. We just thought this was a really worthy one."

Pam Smyth, SAIF's executive director, was very grateful to have such strong support from the community.

"We really appreciate this. This is really helpful."

Smyth said SAIF has seen a growing demand for counselling from all groups, including women, men and couples, prompting them to bring in an additional psychologist. The office will also be open longer hours of services. "We're expanding to meet the need."

Katimavik opens its doors to you next week

The local Katimavik crew wants to welcome you into its temporary home on Tuesday evening. This open house is an opportunity to meet the current team members and learn more about the volunteer service program's activities around St. Albert and Legal.

Over the next few months the squadron of 17- to 21-year-olds from all across the country will contribute their time and talents to various worthy community groups and activities like école Alexandre-Taché and école Citadelle, St. Albert Senior Citizens' Club, the Community Information and Volunteer Centre, and City of St. Albert, among others.

Group members also strive to understand the broad Canadian experience by learning more about what life is like right here.
