Across Alberta, there were another 459 cases of COVID-19 diagnosed in the past 24 hours, with 12,800 tests run for a positivity rate of 3.6 per cent.

Alberta now has 8,203 active cases, down from 8,652 on Tuesday.

The province had 12 more deaths reported to Alberta Health in the past 24 hours.

There are currently 604 people in the hospital with COVID-19, with 110 of them in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Alberta Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said this is lower than the peak of hospitalizations on Dec. 30 with 900 Albertans admitted, but the medical system is still under a lot of pressure.

"This is encouraging news and a signal that we are making meaningful progress. Every one of us should take pride in this," Hinshaw said.

"However, it also means that there are just as many people in hospital today as there were on Dec. 4, when our acute care system was struggling under the impact of COVID-19."

The province has given out 101,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, with 11,000 people receiving both doses.
