Red Brick Wall opens

Red Brick Wall, a new St. Albert Vietnamese restaurant, is up and running. It opened barely a week ago and for now the menu is a bit sparse.

However owners Cathy Truong and Wade Ngo assure me that a full menu is in the works. Many of the basics are available – spicy beef noodle soups, banana leaf dumplings, pork and shrimp salad to name a few.

The young couple hope to specialize in offering Banh Mi or as we’d say – Vietnamese submarines. As Truong explains, the subs would be filled with seasoned and grilled or sautéed meats and complemented with cilantro, cucumbers, pickled carrots, avocados and possibly a pan-fried egg.

Vietnamese submarines start at $7 while noodle soups range from $10 to $12.

Previously, Truong and Ngo operated the Lemon Grass Grill food truck since 2013, but decided they wanted a year-round operation. “We found this place. It was a good location and we set something up full-time,” Truong said.

Truong, who is from Vietnam, named the restaurant after a famous brick wall that surrounds the country’s Imperial City in Hue.

Until March 31, the restaurant offers a free appetizer with any order of more than $20. Red Brick Wall is located at #127, 1 Hebert Rd. Weekday hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Weekend hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Call 780-569-0717 for more information.

Saturday buffet

St. Albert’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch 271 is out to attract more diners at its Taché Street location. It is offering a new Saturday buffet, and today the house specialty is pasta.

The special features include seafood linguini, baked spaghetti, pasta Alfredo and chicken, cannelloni, Caesar salad as well as homemade buns. Vegetarian options and desserts from Kelley’s Deli & Bakery are also available.

The buffet is open 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. An adult plate is $16.95 and kids eat for $10. Call 780-458-3330 for more information.

Beerfest is back

The region’s longest running beerfest returns March 22 and 23 to Edmonton Convention Centre. It features 120 breweries, merchants and food vendors.

More than 300 imported, domestic and craft beers plus wine, cider and spirits will be available for sampling.

In addition to the largest selection of international beers, the festival will offer local favourites including St. Albert’s Endeavour Brewing, Lacombe’s Blindman Brewing, Edmonton’s Bent Stick Brewing and Jasper’s Folding Mountain Brewing.

The two-day event is also packed with diverse entertainment from Nadine Kellmen & Black Wonders, the Whyte Ave Womprats and The Uncas to roving circus performers, burlesque dancers and more.

This is an 18-plus event. General admission is $19 advance and $30 at the door. Weekend passes start at $29. Visit www.eventbrite.ca.
