The St. Albert RCMP have laid 13 charges against a local man following an investigation into break and enters in St. Albert, High Prairie and Onoway.

Shaun Kelly, 33, of St. Albert has been charged with three counts of possessing a weapon obtained by commission of offence; seven counts of unauthorized possession of firearms; possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose; possession of break-in instruments; and failing to comply with release conditions.

The St. Albert RCMP Crime Reduction Unit began an investigation in early July into a number of residential break and enters where firearms were targeted. Police executed a search warrant on an apartment residence on Sturgeon Road.

During the search, officers located five firearms, three of which had been stolen out of High Prairie. One had its barrel sawed off, making it a prohibited weapon.

Kelly is set to appear in St. Albert provincial court on Aug. 12.

Insp. Pam Robinson, the officer in charge of St. Albert RCMP, said crime reduction units specialize in targeting criminals who cause the most harm to communities.

"At the time of arrest, individuals arrested by a Crime Reduction Unit have, on average, minimum three charges against them," she said in a news release
