St. Albert man dies in crash with train bridge support in Sturgeon County

The forty-two-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene after the Mercedes he was driving struck a train bridge support column and caught fire. RCMP are still investigating.

A St. Albert man died in a single-vehicle crash in Sturgeon County on Friday evening.

RCMP and emergency services arrived at the scene of a single-vehicle collision around 5:40 p.m. Friday on Highway 633 near the intersection with Range Road 263 in Sturgeon County, east of Villeneuve, according to a press release from Morinville RCMP.

A preliminary investigation suggests the Mercedes sedan was traveling westbound on Highway 633 when it struck a support column for a train bridge at the location, causing the vehicle to catch fire.

Bystanders saw the collision, removed the driver from the vehicle, and provided first aid, RCMP said in the release.

The driver, a 42-year-old man from St. Albert, was pronounced dead at the scene when paramedics arrived. There were no other occupants of the vehicle.
