St. Albert RCMP are highlighting a way for individuals to discretely signal they need help as part of family violence prevention month.

The Signal for Help, launched during the pandemic, gives individuals a way to indicate they need help on video calls or in public places. The signal consists of tucking your thumb into your open palm, then folding your four other fingers over your thumb, St. Albert RCMP said in a Nov. 25 press release.

In the statement, RCMP highlighted November as family violence prevention month, stating one of the St. Albert detachment's annual priorities is to target domestic violence.

"Police reported family violence continues to rise in Canada," Kristopher Wells, chair of the St. Albert Policing Committee, said in the release. "The COVID-19 pandemic has increased many family stressors, which may be attributed to possible increases in family violence. Unfortunately, we have witnessed these same trends in St. Albert."

Wells said initiatives such as Signal For Help are crucial in assisting victims in the pursuit of support.
