St. Albert reports another death for third day in a row

A woman in her 70s died Dec. 11. The province reported her death on Tuesday. The city saw 16 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday and 36 people recovered.

The death of a St. Albert woman in her 70s, connected to the outbreak at the Chartwell St. Albert Retirement Residence, was reported by Alberta Health on Tuesday. She died Dec. 11.

Tuesday marked the third day in a row the city has reported a death from the virus.

Seven people have died so far from COVID-19 in the city, according to Alberta Health, though several deaths related to a retirement home outbreak in the fall are not included in the official count. At least two of the most recent deaths occurred due to the Chartwell outbreak, including the one reported Tuesday.

The city added 16 new cases of COVID-19 overnight, with 36 more recovering, dropping the city's active case count from 375 to 354. Overall, 876 people have recovered from the virus since the beginning of the pandemic. 

In Sturgeon County, COVID-19 cases sit at 119 active cases and 317 people having recovered since the pandemic began. Morinville has 75 active COVID-19 cases with 151 people having recovered from the virus. 

Alberta chief medical officer of health Deena Hinshaw said Tuesday that cases have plateaued in the province, but she continues to be alarmed by hospitalization numbers.

Currently there are 20,649 active cases of COVID-19 in the province, with 1,341 new cases added overnight. 

In the past 24 hours the province has conducted 16,315 tests with an 8.2 per cent positivity rate. 

There are 742 Albertans in the hospital with 137 people in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

There have been 11 more deaths reported today, including the one from St. Albert. In total, 744 Albertans have lost their lives to COVID-19. 

Currently the R-value for the province, or the number of people a COVID-19 positive person infects, is sitting at 0.98. The Edmonton zone has an R-value of 1.00, while the Calgary Zone has an R-value of 0.92. The rest of Alberta has an infection rate of 1.01. 

According to information from Chartwell on Tuesday morning, two residents had died from the outbreak and staff and residents are working to contain the outbreak that rapidly grew to 58 cases in one week.
