St. Albert Trail construction ready to wrap

The summer of construction on St. Albert Trail should be over soon, but crews will be back to complete some work next spring.

The summer of construction on St. Albert Trail should be over soon, but crews will be back to complete some work next spring.

The road has been under construction from 118 Avenue all the way to 136 Avenue for most of the summer with major upgrades to the bridge over Yellowhead Trail as well.

Byron Nicholson, the director of special projects with the City of Edmonton, said they expect to wrap up the work on the bridge soon.

“Within a couple of weeks we are going to be able to open up all the lanes on that bridge and get everyone flowing the way they should be,” he said.

The bridgework is adding a lane in both directions over Yellowhead Trail and is expected to ease some congestion there.

The work north of the bridge is also largely complete according to Nicholson, with new concrete curbs and asphalt being poured. He said that work should be complete by the end of October.

He said the final layer or topcoat of asphalt will be applied next spring because they are unlikely to get the conditions they need.

“We can’t count on real nice weather through the end of October.”

He said the final coat has to be put down in good weather or it will be of inferior quality. As a result, the city has had to move several projects back.

“We have moved the final asphalt to next year on a number of jobs across the city,” he said. “We want to make sure we put it down in good conditions, we don’t want to take a risk on quality.”

The original plan for this summer included upgrades to the traffic circle at 118 Avenue, but they have also been delayed until next spring.

That project will add another lane in each direction going through the circle to avoid backups in the turning lanes.
