A 13-year-old boy remains in hospital after being struck while crossing St. Albert Trail Thursday afternoon.

A flurry of police officers and emergency vehicles arrived on scene at around 3 p.m. following the crash. Police blocked off the southbound lanes of St. Albert Trail, causing traffic chaos.

The boy was rushed to the Stollery Children’s Hospital. While he suffered bruises, scrapes and more serious internal injuries, he is expected to recover from the accident.

The collision occurred near the intersection of the Trail and St. Vital Avenue.

While officers initially investigated the possibility the driver was at fault, Const. Janice Schoepp with the St. Albert RCMP said several witnesses told officers the boy was running across the busy street outside of the crosswalk and against the lights.

She said under those circumstances, police do not believe the driver of the white pickup truck that hit the boy is at fault.

“The driver of the vehicle is not being charged.”

She said the accident could have been much worse and should underscore to everyone the importance of crossing the street safely and at marked crosswalks.

She said the boy was close to crossing in a crosswalk at St. Vital, but he wasn’t walking in it when the collision occurred.

“Especially in the icy conditions we have now, it is more difficult for a driver to stop if someone jumps out.”

The boy was briefly pinned under the vehicle, but was quickly freed.
