Tree sales down slightly, vendors

Depending who you ask, Christmas tree sales are either down a bit or doing well this year. “It’s been cold but it’s been busy, people still buying trees,” said Lloyd Hicks, who operates the Christmas tree yard on Hebert Road.

Depending who you ask, Christmas tree sales are either down a bit or doing well this year.

“It’s been cold but it’s been busy, people still buying trees,” said Lloyd Hicks, who operates the Christmas tree yard on Hebert Road.

Local yards have been open since early December. The weekends have been busy, Hicks said. He expects this last pre-Christmas weekend to be busy as well.

“We’re going to run short of trees this year. It’s been a very busy year,” he said.

Down the road at Green Grove Drive, operator Bruce Rae said his sales are down about 20 per cent this year, a sign that the economy is eating into discretionary spending.

“It’s starting to rebound today with the weather warming up,” he said in an interview on Thursday.

Al Roulston, operator of the lot on Bellerose Drive, agreed that sales were down.

“Tree sales aren’t bad, down a little but not too much,” he said.

All three yards belong to Edmonton-based Evergreen Christmas Trees.
